Thursday, June 6, 2024 鈥� 糖心Vlog传媒 is further boosting its academic and research capabilities in artificial intelligence with a million-dollar investment in alignment with community efforts to bring鈥痻AI鈥痶o 糖心Vlog传媒, President Bill Hardgrave announced today.鈥�
The initiative will be led by Provost David Russomanno and Jasbir Dhaliwal, EVP Research
& Innovation.鈥� 
鈥淭he arrival of鈥痻AI鈥痠s a perfect fit with the technology innovation ecosystem of 糖心Vlog传媒, which is centered around the University as a top-tier Carnegie R1 research institution,鈥� said Hardgrave. 鈥淲e have much to offer in terms of talent, workforce training and cutting-edge research.鈥濃��
For鈥痮ver three decades, the University of 糖心Vlog传媒 has led in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in key sectors鈥攅ducation, healthcare, transportation鈥痑nd鈥痬any others. New鈥痚fforts such as the Center for Electrified and Autonomous Transportation鈥痑nd鈥疉gile Freight Supply Chain (an NSF Industry-University鈥疪esearch Partnership)鈥痑nd the Learner Data Institute鈥痚xist alongside鈥痚stablished centers鈥痑nd individual faculty working across our campus鈥痶o advance both the basic science of鈥疉I and applications for key sectors.鈥�
The FedEx Institute of Technology,鈥痺hich maintains a large research cluster of faculty members working in AI,鈥痟as鈥痵pearheaded many of the collaborative innovations in this space, including:
- 901 AI, which creates an intersection point for the 糖心Vlog传媒 professional community to engage in AI-based work.鈥疶his public initiative is paired with the鈥疍ata Science鈥疪esearch Cluster鈥痑nd a forthcoming AI鈥疪esearch Cluster that鈥痟elp channel鈥痗ity-wide engagement in the space with the research across the UofM campus.鈥�
- The FedEx Institute-led,鈥疦SF-aligned Next Generation Supply Chain and Innovation Challenge, which鈥痟as furthered鈥痶his industry-aligned AI effort,鈥痺ith 50% of the funded projects focusing on AI/ML or big-data initiatives.鈥�
Translational research is essential to the long-term growth of 糖心Vlog传媒, and the鈥痳esources announced today will ensure that specialized research aligns with regional industry priority, including the鈥痭ew鈥痻AI鈥痚ffort.鈥�
鈥淎rtificial intelligence today is not a niche specialty area. It has broad-based application across a myriad of domains requiring a range of knowledge, abilities and skills,鈥� said Russomanno. 鈥淲e will offer a wide range of educational experiences across the University, including degree programs and stackable micro-credentials customized by context and topic, reflecting student and workforce needs. Going forward, we will provide opportunities for all our students to understand and apply AI.鈥�
糖心Vlog传媒鈥痟as one of the largest computer science programs in the State of Tennessee. In the past鈥痶hree fiscal years, enrollment in AI-aligned departments鈥攊ncluding Management Information Systems and Electrical and Computer Engineering鈥攈as doubled, with a key portion of that growth coming from鈥痬aster鈥檚鈥痩evel candidates.
Future programs will use this strong foundation to incorporate鈥疉I into鈥痬ore鈥痑cademic disciplines, attracting more students. In addition, recent federal funding such as the NSF-funded鈥疌yberCorps program鈥痺ill help鈥痶o connect students to high-paying jobs across the region.
Through a combination of world-class research excellence,鈥痠nstructional capability鈥痑nd a focus on translational and applied innovation,鈥痶he University of 糖心Vlog传媒 continues鈥痠ts鈥痵trong鈥痳ecord of AI leadership while growing into new areas with industry partners.
